Our country is finally getting to the issue of health care reform, as we're facing a crisis in it. Health care alone is going to take up close to 50 per-cent of the median family income in an expected 9 years. With this devastating news not reforming our health care system is not an option, but in this debate, the Republicans and conservative Democrats are voting no, and especially voting no to abortions being covered by government tax money (I can't have my money go to reduce overpopulation, poverty, and crime via abortions, but I am forced to have my money go executions, warfare, and stupidity?). This is detrimental to the working class women who cannot afford abortions. Will these women be forced to care for a child that they resent conceiving? For that isn't a positive environment to be raised in, and no one should be forced to endure that lifestyle situation. If these conservative anti-abortion/anti-choice (not pro-life, for everyone is pro-life) choose to dictate their religious beliefs onto the reproductive cpabilities of women, then they should adopt the unwanted, sacred life.

The movie Gracie displays the delimma of women in men's sport. Should she do it and be ostracized by her school and the team and be a star athlete or should she sit in the wake of sport fame on the women's soccer team? This situation happens to women in society no matter how successful they are at a sport. People are disinterested in women's sports in comparison to men's sports, and to me it doesn't make sense. Why shouldn't the best athlete play on the best team and be rewarded for it instead of being stigmatized for it? Women need to rise up with fists in the sports realm, in any realm of life where they aren't treated equal, and take the success and the attention that they deserve, which Gracie does.

Cosmopolitan, being a magazine for Women, is surprisingly breaking the barrier. "The fundamental contradiction between encouraging men's sexuality and expecting women to be chate results in the construction of two categories of women: 'good' women and 'bad' women, virgins and whores..."(151). Men blush as they walk up to the grocery lines and see "10 Way to Make Him Hot". They're uncomfortable with the sexual openness delivered by such press as Cosmopolitan. They aren't used to it-- Society isn't accustomed to the normal woman being sexually active. We're now being so open about our sexuality that we recognize that pre-marital sex is actually a good thing. Saving sex for marriage actually reduces your sexual functionality later in life. This article below explains "Why Bad Sex Is Shortening Your Life". It actually talks about the female orgasm, which was not experienced by many women before the Sexual Revolution. Most of the sexual activity before then was just to pleasure the man, give him the orgasm, and now the tables have turned.

Rachel Getting Married

This Movie Displays the main character, Anne Hathaway, in a volatile state in her personal war on drugs and the crime behind it. She takes a break from her rehabilitation facility to attend her sister's wedding, to be a familial retreat, but it ends up bringing her close to the boiling point.

This movie displays relevance between many young women today that are enveloped in drugs, stigmatized by their communities, especially post-drug use and "post-addiction". Her family struggles to take her back in comfortingly. This movie also deals with flashbacks of a common crime within today's society, driving while intoxicated. This common crime is put into the spotlight and shown the personal dangers that it deal to a person and their surroundings. This film is an accurate and rational portrayal of crime in young women today.

Women in Football

Women in Football is a recent phenomenon that only began in the 1970s, and it still continues to grow slowly but surely. Over fourteen women's football leagues have existed since the 70s, and only four are prominent today in America. They generally go by the same rules as men football, and much of society is surprised that women can handle the roughness that football possesses. Any women's football league has yet to possess professional status, and only a few women's football teams exist for younger girls, especially within highschool.

Women at Arms

"[W]omen are not physically strong enough, are too emotional, and lack discipline or stamina. They would be bad for men's morale". (497) This is the common idea of women in combat, that they're not mentally or physically strong enough to endure war, but with the mental instability from men rising from warfare in Vietnam and the Middle East, I would beg to differ. Combat roles have morphed in this past war due to technological advances. Everyone, no matter if you're on the battlefield or not, is becoming a combat zone, with "[c]ommunications and supply, defined as noncombat areas where women work, are both likely targets of attack. So, now women are now forced to combat training within the military. In the Gulf War, women proved themselves to "the man" and much legislation and regulations were changed because of this, allowing more and more combat-related activities to be given to women. "In 2008, close to 90 percent of military jobs were open to women"(498) This will only increase as gender roles are becoming less solidified in today's society.

Sublime - Wrong Way

Forced prostitution never seems to be talked about in this country. It isn't as common as it is in other countries, but this violence towards women still exists. This song narrarates the life of a girl who begins prostitutiton at the age of fourteen for her "seven horny brothers and her drunk ass dad." But this is validated by her "family get[ing] payed". This violence towards women is unacceptable, and the country and world need to be more aware of these heinous crimes against women, no matter if the prostitution is forced or not, it is still violence against women.
